About SUMM

The School of University Ministries & Mission is a 12-week intensive training to prepare YWAM staff to connect with God’s heart for the university world.

Participants learn how strategic mobilization of students toward their life work and calling relates to the destiny of nations. In addition to historical and biblical studies related to universities and students, they participate in practical research of the migration of students and learn how to equip them for effective witness in various areas of society (arts, business, education, government, media, science and technology). They  learn how to work together with others mobilizing the resources of the university toward fulfillment of the Great Commission as outlined in the Christian Magna Carta, communicating the gospel of the kingdom to and from the university community.

This blog brings an on-going conversation about university ministries & missions to a wider community.

For twenty years, leaders of the SMC have led university student internships with the University of the Nations, which has mobilized over 75 student teams from over 100 colleges and universities around the world to integrate their fields of study.

The SMC international committee developed the curriculum and six members gave leadership to the first School of University Ministries in 2004 in Delhi, India. YWAM’s foundational value is “first do, then teach.” After years of experience leading students on summer teams and partnering with churches, student groups, and mission projects, SMC was released to train a new generation of student ministries leaders, emphasizing the transformation of nations through the transformation of students.

International Centre Director, John Henry, and SMC S. Asia Director, Aldrin Bogi, led the first School of University Ministries (SUM) in Delhi, India with a team of nine staff from six nations. That first school had twenty-four YWAM participants from eight nations, including China, India, Korea, Mexico, Nepal, and Thailand. The second SUM was led by Aldrin Bogi in Bangalore, India. The next SUM was led in Thailand by Changsoo Y, and the SUM participants pioneered five new campus ministries in Thailand, Cambodia, and India. Today, with the equipping of leaders in the School of University Ministries (SUM), YWAM’s campus ministries is becoming a movement. South Asia now has 105 campus ministries staff, almost fifty have been trained in the SUM. Seventy five are from India and thirty from Korea. YWAM Campus Ministries are now in 70 cities in 31 countries.

The SMC has staff in Cartegena, Colombia; Bangalore & Delhi, India; Columbia, MD; Atlanta, GA; Colorado Springs, CO; and Madison, WI in the USA.

1.Pioneer missional communities in a university setting.
